Winter Whites

Think beyond the good old Red this winter and match some of your favourite hearty winter dishes with a rich white wine. Think Pinot Grigio and chicken, Viognier with pasta; a heavy wooded Chardonnay with pork or Roussanne and red meat.  Here's some of our suggestions; give them a try and surprise guests and family with your inventiveness.

Terra Felix Viognier 2008
Aromas of apricot, peaches and exotic stone fruits with a dry finish.  Ideal with seared chicken   $12.99 ****

Tollana Viognier 2004
A crisp and balanced Viognier from a great year, showing impressive aged characteristics of nutmeg, citrus and orange blossom.  Try it with Pork Medallions  $15.99 ****

Lost Valley Cortese 2004
A rare variety originating in Northern Italy that produces delicate aromas of citrus and pear with wonderful honey suckle on the back palate.  Great with oven baked trout  $19.99 *****

Seppelt Marsanne/Roussanne 2003
This is a gold medal winning, limited release, that is just starting to show what these two grape varieties can produce.  A good match with gourmet sausages  $19.99 *****

St Huberts Roussanne 2005
A renowned variety that St Huberts do so well.  If you have not tried a Roussanne, this is the one to start with. A benchmark wine from the Yarra Valley.  Serve it next time you cook lamb roast  $24.99 *****

Penfold Reserve Bin 98A Chardonnay 1998
A special occasion wine!  It will Cellar nicely for another 5-8 years yet.  Only released in exceptional years and using the best French Oak barriques (225 litre) this wine has won a multitude of Trophies and medals.  Perfect with oven baked rib-eye steak  $79.99 *****

Long Gully Estate Chardonnay 2007
A real hidden gem, this wine has won 3 Trophies and 4 Gold Medals.  At an extremely reasonable price, it is a great wine to try.  Citrus peel, hints of pear and white peach overlay beautifully balanced French Oak.  A good excuse to indulge in a hearty Shepherd's pie & mash   $18.99 *****
